EP-Taiwan Vriendskapsgroep verwelkom die ROC se 'South China Sea Peace Initiative' van harte

On 2 June, Dr. Werner Langen MEP issued a statement on behalf of the Taiwan Friendship Group in the European Parliament to express his strong support for the 'South China Sea Peace Initiative' proposed by ROC President Ma Ying-jeou.

In the statement, Langen said he “highly welcomes the South China Sea Peace Initiative,” and praises it as “urgently needed and a good way to contribute to fostering peace, security and stability and to a reduction of tensions”.

The statement also emphasized that President Ma's East China Sea Initiative in 2012 led to the signing of a fisheries agreement between Japan and the ROC in 2013.

South China Sea Peace Initiative to be discussed in ASEAN Delegation in European Parliament

As the president of EP-Taiwan Friendship Group and the chairman of the ASEAN-Delegation in the European Parliament, MEP Langen mentioned in the statement that the Initiative “will be also discussed during the upcoming meeting of the ASEAN Delegation in the European Parliament”.

ROC urges all parties to shelve disputes and promote joint development
ROC President Ma Ying-jeou announced the South China Sea Peace Initiative on 26 May, urging all parties concerned to exercise restraint and refrain from taking any unilateral action that might escalate tensions, to respect international law to establish regional cooperation mechanisms or code of conduct in an inclusive manner, and to set up co-ordination mechanisms for non-traditional security issues.

In co-operation with other parties, the ROC government is willing to exploit natural resources in the region, under the principle of “safeguarding sovereignty, shelving disputes, pursuing peace and reciprocity, and promoting joint development”, thereby making the South China Sea a sea of peace and co-operation like the East China Sea.
