Die Europese Kommissie het 'n openbare raadpleging to gather views on possible EU accession to the Haagse Konvensie oor die erkenning en tenuitvoerlegging van buitelandse vonnisse in burgerlike of handelssake.

The aim of the Convention is to facilitate the recognition and enforcement of judgments by the courts of signatory countries. In turn, this will facilitate trade and investment by improving legal certainty as well as by reducing costs in international trade and international dispute resolution.

Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders said: “The recognition of judgments helps companies expand their businesses in our internal market. We believe that ratifying the Convention – which extends this system of recognition to the international level – will support businesses even more. But before we go any further, we need to know that citizens and businesses share this view.”

The public consultation is part of a omvattende impakstudie on EU accession to the Convention, based on which the Commission will prepare a proposal for accession, should the results be favourable. This process for potential ratification of the 2019 Hague Convention follows on from the adoption last July. The consultation will run for 15 weeks until 5 October.
