On the occasion of World Refugee Day on 20 June, the Commission announced the 12 projects that are in the shortlist for the EIC Horizon Prize for Affordable High-Tech for Humanitarian Aid. This €5 million prize is run under Horizon 2020, the EU research and innovation programme, and will reward the best, proven and cost-effective, technology solutions for humanitarian aid. It is divided into five categories: shelter and related assistance; water, hygiene and sanitation; energy; health and medical care; and an ‘open' category. Technologies can include nanotechnologies, advanced materials or 3D printing.

Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Commissioner Mariya Gabriel said: “This Prize represents the Commission's commitment to promote innovation and technologies that can improve people's lives, in particular the most vulnerable. The solutions put forward also demonstrate that technologies can be applied in an inclusive and affordable manner. I am happy to see that the Prize attracted new applicants from the EU and across the world.”

Crisis Management Commissioner Janez Lenarčič added: "Faced with mounting crises and new challenges, such as COVID-19, innovation is vital for humanitarians to continue to reach people most in need. These low-cost yet high tech innovations can be valuable tools for our humanitarian partners, and help ensure EU aid is delivered as efficiently and effectively as possible.”

The winners will be announced in September during the Europese navorsings- en innovasiedae. During this event, the Commission will also award the Europese hoofstad van innovasie 2020, die EU-prys vir vroue-innoveerders 2020 en die Horizon Impact Award 2020.
